Disney’s National Treasure reboot series has cast up-and-coming actress Lisette Alexis as its lead actress for the high-profile project. The concept, which hails from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature, is executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub and writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, The National Treasure reboot is an expansion of the National Treasure movie franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine (Alexis) – a DREAMer in search of answers about her family–who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.

The series, whose pilot episode is written by the Wibberleys and will be directed by Mira Nair, centers on Jess (Alexis), a Latina whose brilliant and resourceful mind loves a good mystery, and she has a natural talent for solving puzzles. Throughout the show, Jess will uncover her own buried history, as well as the truth about her parents and her connection to a long-lost treasure.

As far as connections to the original franchise go, the National Treasure reboot will find Jess following in the footsteps of Benjamin Gates, the National Treasure films’ protagonist played by Nicolas Cage.

Alexis is relatively new to the acting scene. She played Belle on the Total Eclipse TV series, a high school drama in which Cassie (Mackenzie Ziegler) and her friends can escape into fantasy worlds of their choosing. Alexis also starred as Amy in We Need to Do Something for director Sean King O’Grady. In the film, a young girl named Melissa (Sierra McCormick), and her family, seek shelter from a storm but become trapped. With no sign of rescue, Melissa comes to realize that she and her girlfriend Amy might have something to do with the horrors that threaten her family.

I think it’s cool to see that National Treasure is going in a new direction. After all, Cage is quite busy starring in films like Willy’s Wonderland, Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and more. I don’t know that he has any desire to return to the National Treasure franchise in any major capacity, so, they might as well shake things up, right? As long as the National Treasure reboot carries a torch for the original films and goes out of its way to be fun, I think we’re in good shape.
