Netflix will soon be getting an update that allows subscribers access to Top 10 lists that highlight the most popular titles on the streaming platform. Each list will be comprised using data that reflects viewing in each country, with daily updates scheduled to roll out every 24 hours.
In the interest of making the lists unique, Netflix plans to present each Top 10 using a variety of categories, including an overall list, one for Top 10 films, and finally, one for the platform's Top 10 TV shows. Both original and licensed content will be featured as a part of each respective list. The goal of this initiative of course is to push the streaming service's most-viewed content, be it from Netflix's in-house production arm or otherwise.
While the lists are poised to give viewers an up-to-date look at what might be talked about around the old water cooler, Netflix has no intention of sharing the viewership data for each individual item listed. When calculating the popularity of the title, the algorithm will only consider titles that have been watched for at least two minutes or more.
Netflix's own Cameron Johnson announced the Top 10 initiative via blog post on Monday, writing "When you watch a great movie or TV show, you share it with family and friends, or talk about it at work, so other people can enjoy it too. We hope these top 10 lists will help create more of these shared moments, while also helping all of us find something to watch more quickly and easily."
