With each successive announcement regarding Netflix’s upcoming DAREDEVIL television series, I have become more and more excited for the project. The casting of Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosario Dawson, and Deborah Ann Woll all seem to be pitch perfect and even the departure of Drew Goddard doesn’t seem to have impacted the development of the show. But, I cannot help but hoping that the series would be a darker look at the hero than we saw in the Ben Affleck film or even what has been released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Something along the lines of Joe Carnahan‘s infamous sizzle reel for his never made film version.
At the recent red carpet premiere of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight was asked for some news about the series and he shared exactly what fans wanted to hear.
“We’re going for a very gritty, 1970s New York feel for the [‘Daredevil’] show. We love the idea of beauty in the decay of the city, and Hell’s Kitchen being a place that is both horrible and beautiful at the same time. That’s why Matt Murdock loves it so much and wants to protect it.”
Yes! Gritty and noir are the buzz words we needed to know would be included with DAREDEVIL. Being on Netflix, there is not as much restriction as there would be for an MPAA-rated film. They could easily make this a very dark and violent show and tone it down for any big screen appearances. All I know is that DeKnight seems to have the feel needed to make DAREDEVIL the right way. Hopefully he means it.
DAREDEVIL premieres on Netflix in 2015.
