New Scream movie is a hip & scary relaunch, says Courteney Cox

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

We still have a lot of months to wait before the new Scream film from Ready or Not (watch it HERE) directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett reaches theatres on January 14, 2022, which gives us plenty of time to ponder exactly how screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick have continued the Scream story this time around. We know original Scream stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox have been brought back as the characters Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley, and Gale Weathers (and Scream 4's Marley Shelton is also back as Judy Hicks)… but that's about all we know.

Cox was recently interviewed by fellow Scream cast member Drew Barrymore on an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, and of course the subject of Scream came up along the way. Cox didn't reveal any details on the new film, but she did sound very enthusiastic about it:

Scream, this is the fifth one. It's not Scream 5, though. This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they're making it absolutely… it's a new franchise. It's hip, it's scary. It's just a new Scream. It's not a reboot, it's not a remake, it's just a brand new launch. I think it's going to be fantastic."

Given the presence of returning characters, this is clearly a follow-up to the existing films, which makes it a sequel, but it's quite obvious that nobody involved wants to use the word "sequel". As you can see from Cox's quote, and the fact that the movie is simply titled Scream

The returning stars are joined in the cast by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kyle Gallner, and Sonia Ammar.

Vanderbilt also produced the film for Project X Entertainment, alongside Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Chad Villella and Kevin Williamson serve as executive producers.

The new Scream is coming to us from Paramount and Spyglass.
