New trailer for Nightcrawler showcases the dark side of television news

The first full trailer for Dan Gilroy‘s NIGHTCRAWLER dropped a month ago, it looked like a dark glimpse into the world of amateur news reporting. There looked to be a satirical bend to Jake Gyllenhaal‘s over the top performance, something like NETWORK for the 21st century. But, now a second trailer has arrived and makes NIGHTCRAWLER look a lot darker than I first thought.

The movie still follows Gyllenhaal’s character as he strives to break into the world of underground news reporting, but now we get a closer look at the depths he will sink to in order to get the story and that there is almost nothing he won’t do, including moving bodies and recording crimes as they happen.

Make no mistake, NIGHTCRAWLER looks like it is going to be controversial. But, now we have a look at Bill Paxton as the mentor-like figure who breaks Gyllenhaal into his new career and more from Rene Russo as the network executive who buys his footage. NIGHTCRAWLER could be the breakout hit of the fall if it lives up to this trailer.

NIGHTCRAWLER, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Paxton, and Rene Russo, will hit theaters on October 17, 2014.
