Director Chris McKay is finally disclosing some new information about his Nightwing movie for DC Films and he seems pretty confident that the door is still open for the film to happen.

There have been multiple DC Comics films that have been announced over the years and some of them haven't been quite clear about whether or not they will actually come to fruition. Nightwing has been one of those projects as it was first announced back in 2017 and with it came a lot of hype because it's based on one of the comic company's most popular characters. Since its announcement, there have been setbacks with the project, but director Chris McKay has provided us with an update on the film.

McKay recently spoke with CinemaBlend's ReelBlend Podcast and during the interview, the director revealed the film has not been canceled. Working in his favor is that other DC movies such as Ava Duvernay's New Gods and James Wan's The Trench were canned by the company but that has not been the case with Nightwing. Here is what McKay had to say about the project:

"I hope it's still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I'm concerned, it's not lost yet. It is obviously something that… they've had other priorities, they've had other challenges. They'd had things that they needed to do, and I think that they found their way. I think their recent successes, and the stuff that they are planning on doing now, I think it opens the door for us to still be able to do a Nightwing movie. Whether you call it 'in an alternate universe' or you pick in their multiverse version which universe it's part of, there are different ways into it. But Nightwing is a big, action-packed, emotional movie. It may not, budgetarily, be similar to what we do with The Tomorrow War. But from a scope and scale standpoint, as far as the kind of action and the kind of heart, that's what Nightwing is going to be all about."

Nightwing really is one of the most beloved DC characters in their arsenal. He debuted, as we knew him, a year after Batman in 1940 as Robin. His parents, who worked as circus acrobats, were murdered while performing one of their stunts in front of a crowd which made Bruce Wayne take it upon himself to raise the then kid Dick Grayson and teach him the ways of crime-fighting. Grayson served as Robin for a number of years but as he grew up, he had a falling out with his mentor and ultimately became his own hero when he took on the persona of Nightwing. As Nightwing, he fights crime solo with the occasional team-up involving Batman and his allies.

The character has appeared on various animated projects and the Titans live-action series but a big-screen debut is something fans have been longing for. A lot has gone on with DC and their various film projects but the fact that they haven't officially let this concept go, bodes well that it could still happen in the future. McKay seems confident and he also seems pretty damn passionate about the project too.
