Netflix is hot for Noah Baumbach and is prepared to put their money where their mouth is. The acclaimed director, writer, and producer just signed an exclusive deal with the streamer that will have him writing and directing films for the platform for the next several years.
“When I started in the film industry I dreamed of having a home. It took me about 25 years but it was worth the wait,” Baumbach commented. ”I couldn’t be more thrilled to be making movies with Ted and Scott and everyone at Netflix, who are wonderful collaborators and friends and family.”
Baumbach and Netflix have become good friends over the past few years, and it all began when his first film for the streamer, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), arrived as a glowing success. Baumbach then teamed with Netflix again for the highly acclaimed Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern. The meme-worthy look at the trials and tribulations of love was nominated for six Academy Awards, including two for Baumbach, and a win for Dern.
“For more than two decades Noah has been writing and directing some of the most personal and influential films in American cinema,” Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO, and Chief Content Officer said. ” When we started to work together almost 4 years ago, he immediately felt like family and I’m thrilled we’re finally making it official.”
Up next for Baumbach is White Noise, an adaptation of author Don DeLillo's novel of the same name. Set at a bucolic mid-western college known only as The-College-on-the-Hill, White Noise follows a year in the life of Jack Gladney, a professor who has made his name by pioneering the field of Hitler studies. It had previously been reported that Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, to whom Baumbach is married, will star alongside one another in the upcoming film, though discussions are still underway. Baumbach will help produce the project with David Heyman. Previously, the duo had joined forces to produce Marriage Story.
