With Minions & Monsters now in theaters (read our review here), it’s already time for Illumination Entertainment to hit us with a teaser for the studio’s latest animated feature, titled Not Alone. The new alien-themed animation features the voices of Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez as Joe, an “introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone,” and Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket,” respectively.
What’s Not Alone about?
Per the official synopsis, “When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance. Life becomes more complicated when three aliens — tiny, unruly and adorable — take refuge in Joe’s home. Dunk, Welly and Shirm are on the interplanetary run from a zealous-yet-inept officer of the law named Zandro. The aliens determine that Fran’s rocket could provide their means of getting back home to safety.”
The aliens, named Dunk, Wlly, and Shrim, will be voiced by British comedic actors Rob Brydon (Barbie), Diane Morgan (Mandy), and Jamie Demetriou (Cruella). In contrast, Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso fame voices Officer Zandro. Supporting players include Allison Janney (Minions & Monsters) and Lamorne Morris (Spider-Noir).
What happens in the Not Alone teaser trailer?
Today’s Not Alone teaser trailer, set to David Bowie’s 1969 hit “Space Oddity,” focuses on the blossoming relationship between Joe (Chalamet) and Fran (Gomez), who, after working alongside one another at a space center, make dinner plans, hoping to test the limits of their mutual attraction to one another. Then, to their surprise, an alert from the rocket they sent to space warns them about a foreign object hurtling toward the atmosphere. That object turns out to be an out-of-control craft with tiny aliens inside. The group eventually finds their way to Joe, who doesn’t know how to make heads or tails of his new situation.
For me, everything about this trailer felt like a breath of fresh air, until the aliens entered the picture. If the whole movie were about Joe and Fran, I would be putting this near the top of my most-anticipated animated films of next year list, but alas. Still, the aliens look funny. They’re bright, colorful, and quite funny. While I would have gladly watched a film solely about Joe and Fran, the addition of the aliens could add an element of humor that yields hilarious results. I’m eager to check this one out when it comes to theaters on April 16, 2027.
