Nova movie in early development from Loki creator Michael Waldron

It remains to be seen what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will bring after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, but one of those projects could be a movie based on Nova, a superhuman member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps.

Michael Waldron, best known for Rick & Morty, Loki, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is set to write the script for the Nova movie, with an eye towards directing should it move forward.

The Nova Movie

You may recall that this isn’t the first time Marvel has been developing a Nova project; it was initially planned as a TV series for Disney+ before the studio put it on hold. The movie is a ways off as the project is still in early development.

Waldron has even mentioned Nova previously, suggesting that Glen Powell would be a great fit for the character. “He’d be a pretty good Nova,” he told The Playlist. Powell and Waldron co-created Chad Powers, the sports-comedy series in which Powell stars as the titular character. Now that Waldron is actually working on the project, maybe it could happen.

Who is Nova?

The original Nova, Richard Rider, was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Romita Sr. and first appeared in The Man Called Nova #1, published in September 1976. An ordinary New York teenager, Richard was selected by the dying alien Rhomann Dey to inherit his powers and take his place in the Nova Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping organization based on the planet Xandar.

Powered by the cosmic Nova Force, Richard possesses superhuman strength, speed and durability, as well as the ability to fly at tremendous speeds, survive in space, generate energy blasts and create protective shields.

Avengers: Doomsday

In addition to Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Waldron is also credited as the co-writer of Avengers: Doomsday alongside Stephen McFeely. We can expect a lot more about the film to be revealed when Marvel invades Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con next week, including the first full trailer. Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
