It’s been four years since the release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but Ewan McGregor hasn’t given up hope that he’ll play the Jedi Master again, even calling upon Disney to get the ball rolling on season 2.
Ewan McGregor is Ready for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2
While speaking with E! News on the press tour for The End of Oak Street, McGregor confirmed that he’s more than down to suit up as Obi-Wan once again; Disney just needs to make it happen.
“I’m ready whenever they are,” he said. “They just seem to not be ready, but I’m up for it. At the end of the ‘Obi-Wan’ series, I’m walking off into the desert and I’ve decided to leave. I’ve realized I can’t keep the pressure on Luke. I realized he has to have his own childhood, so I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. And I wander off… and Qui-Gon’s back. And we go off… but where are we going?“
McGregor continued, “The next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness up in the mountains. What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories. Stories, you know, series or movies. We’ve got plenty of time; I’ve got 10 years before I am Alec Guinesses’ age. So come on, Disney!“
Although the series wasn’t perfect, I did enjoy it. McGregor’s Obi-Wan is always delightful, and seeing him share the screen with Hayden Christensen once again was a highlight. I say bring on Obi-Wan season 2!
The series took place ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and followed the former Jedi master as he set off on a mission to rescue a young Leia Organa. Along the way, he confronts his former apprentice and accepts that Anakin Skywalker has been consumed by Darth Vader. The project had originally been pitched as a trilogy of movies by Stuart Beattie, who conceived a story which would have explored Kenobi’s transition from the character we saw at the end of Revenge of the Sith to the one we first met in A New Hope. The underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story caused Disney to reconsider, and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story made the leap to the small screen.
The End of Oak Street
McGregor will soon be seen starring alongside Anne Hathaway in The End of Oak Street, a sci-fi thriller written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows).
The description reads: “After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.” The film will hit theaters on August 14.
