Obi-Wan Kenobi series: Sung Kang teases details about his Star Wars character

Obi-Wan Kenobi series Sung Kang Star Wars

As excited as I am for the Star Wars franchise to tackle new stories and new characters, my most anticipated Star Wars project is easily the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. I just can’t help it. The new series will find Ewan McGregor reprising his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi and will take place a decade after the events of Revenge of the Sith.

Production on the six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi series has been underway since April and for many members of the ensemble cast, getting to play in the Star Wars sandbox is a dream come true. F9 star Sung Kang has been a fan of the franchise since he was a kid and dropped a major detail about his character while speaking with ScreenRant.

I used to dress in the cheap Kmart plastic Halloween costumes — [of] Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader — almost every single day from eight to thirteen years old. My friends and I would play pretend, we’d make our own lightsabers out of, you know, toilet paper centers and stuff like that…To be able to be on set and see Darth Vader and see the Star Wars universe in front of me…just as a fan, to be able to be a part of that history is pretty amazing. I kept pinching myself going, ‘How did I end up here?’ And my character has a lightsaber, [and] it’s not a toy, it’s actually the real thing.

There you have it, Sung Kang’s character will be weilding a lightsaber in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. There have been rumours that his character is one of the Inquisitors, but nothing has been confirmed at this time. In addition to Ewan McGregor and Sung Kang, the series also stars  Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased), Bonnie Piesse (The Vow), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), Rupert Friend (Homeland), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Simone Kessell (Reckoning), and Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems). The series will also feature the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. The series will launch on Disney+ in 2022.
