O’Dessa: Sadie Sink to star in Geremy Jasper’s post-apocalyptic rock opera

Stranger Things and The Whale star Sadie Sink isn’t wasting any time lining up her next acting gig. According to Deadline, Sink will star in Searchlight‘s O’Dessa, a post-apocalyptic rock opera by Geremy Jasper. The Patti Cake$ director will write and direct the project and write and produce the songs with Jason Binnick. 

Jasper’s O’Dessa revolves around a farmgirl on an epic quest to recover a cherished heirloom. The odyssey takes her into the bowels of a strange and ruthless city, where she falls in love. However, to save her lover’s soul, she must test the limits of destiny and song.

Michael Gottwald produces through the Department of Motion Pictures with Noah Stahl and Rodrigo Teixeira for RT Features. Jonathan Montepare, Dan Janvey, and Lourenço Sant’Anna executive produce, making O’Dessa something of a Patti Cake$ reunion.

“We are so excited to be collaborating with Geremy again,” said Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “With O’dessa, he brings extraordinary and visceral energy to a whole new cinematic landscape.”

O’Dessa is Sink’s first project since her scene-stealing performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. In The Whale, Sink plays Ellie, the estranged teenage daughter of a morbidly obese father searching for redemption. Sink was nominated for a Critics Choice award for Best Young Actor/Actress for her powerful performance, though she lost to Gabriel LaBelle of Steve Speilberg’s The Fabelmans. She also played the lead in Taylor Swift’s short All Too Well: The Short Film.

Sink will shoot her part for O’Dessa this May in Croatia before returning to the Upside-Down for the fifth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Thankfully, Jasper is adept at making musical dramas after helming Patti Cake$ for Fox Searchlight Pictures. In Patti Cake$, an aspiring rapper, Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Killa P, a.k.a. Patti Cake$, fights an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in New Jersey. Curtis Hanson and Eminem’s 8 Mile fans will likely enjoy Patti Cake$ as it explores the realm of homebrew rap with an underdog edge. Danielle Macdonald is exceptional in the lead role, with Bridget Everett and Mamoudou Athie delivering outstanding performances.
