Only Murders in the Building Season 2 first look images tease more high-rise hijinks

Only Murders in the Building Season 2 sounds like it will take meta storytelling to another level when the show returns to Hulu on June 28. At least that’s how the Only Murders showrunner and co-creator John Hoffman tells it during an in-depth talk with Vanity Fair. Speaking about the following chapters of the hit show, Hoffman detailed what’s in store for Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) as they embark on another dangerously funny foray into crime-solving. In addition to posting the interview, VF also shared a gallery of Only Murders in the Building Season 2 first look images, which we’ve posted below.

“I found great comfort in the writers’ room that anything that would come up about our season-two challenges could find its way into the narrative,” Hoffman said about the creative process for the sophomore season.

After solving the murder of their neighbor Tim Kono, the Arconia trio finds themselves the victims of a setup after discovering the Building’s board president Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell). Faced with proving their innocence, Charles, Mabel, and Oliver will have to up their detective game to clear their names.

“Do you try and exonerate yourself, or do you take advantage of this weird New York–famous moment that happens, where you’re on the front pages?” Hoffman says about the challenges facing the primary players of the show in the new season. “It was a great edge to write on, the back-and-forth of conflict that allows for, ‘Be careful what you wish for.'”

When Only Murders in the Building returns, the new season promises to include more guest stars, mysteries about the history of the Arconia, and twists and cliffhangers that will keep fans of the first season on the edge of their seat.

Also included in the new season is the addition of a new character, Alice, played by Cara Delevingne. Alice is an art gallery owner who also serves as a love interest for Mabel. Gomez and Delevingne are longtime friends, so their onscreen chemistry is electric and preexisting. “It was amazing to have the two of them know each other and feel comfortable,” Hoffman says. “It’s a little sparky in all the right ways that make you feel like, Oh, someone’s opening someone’s world.”

The new season also introduced Amy Schumer to the mix, who plays an obnoxious version of herself, and is a new resident of the Arconia. Her character wants to take the Only Murders podcast to the silver screen. She wants to play a feminist antihero version of Jan, a pivotal character from the first season played by Amy Ryan. The problem is that the show’s creators (Charles, Mabel, and Oliver) need to clear their names before negotiations can begin. Schumer is bound to introduce plenty of comedy to a show that’s already hilarious and dark in all the right ways.

I am a massive fan of what Martin, Gomez, and Short did with Only Murders in the Building, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store when the show comes back this Summer. Are you looking forward to it?
