Outland remake planned

Here we go, folks: a remake of a remake. That’s what’s it’s come to.

The film in question is OUTLAND, which will be coming to us from director Michael Davis (SHOOT ‘EM UP, MONSTER MAN). It’s a remake of the 1981 sci-fi flick of the same name that stars Sean Connery. That film, directed by Peter Hyams, was a loose remake of the classic Gary Cooper western HIGH NOON… So here we are.

The new version shifts the action to an orbiting city where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife’s former boyfriend.

Warner Bros. is the studio behind it; screenwriter Chad St. John (isn’t he a porn star?) is penning the script. St. John made his name with the (as yet unproduced) spec script THE DAYS BEFORE, which is about aliens wiping out humanity by traveling back in time – one day at a time… That actually seems like a cooler concept than the OUTLAND remake, but what can you do..?

Both SHOOT ‘EM UP and MONSTER MAN are f*cking wacky movies, so I’m guessing this will have some of Davis’ trademark over-the-top zaniness. We’ll keep a close eye on this one as it moves forward…
