As the moments tick away…Paramount’s feeling the heat!
Deadline is reporting a time-sensitive situation for the major studio and its plans to readapt Frank Herbert’s sprawling sci-fi epic DUNE. Holding rights to the celebrated novel for the past four years, word now states that if Paramount doesn’t have a legit production start date by next Spring…they’ll lose said rights quicker than the Democrats lost the House last week. With no additional option extension made available by the current rights holders, Paramount is now off to fetch a director to shoot a script written by Chase Palmer (NUMBER 13). They won’t be fickle…they’ll be as diligent as they would for any flick with a cost upward of $100 million. However, if they can’t find someone they are 100% confident in…they’ll likely forgo the rights altogether and move on.
“We don’t want to extend an option and watch the studio take seven years,” said Richard Rubenstein. “This is on a short tether. It’s a major book franchise, you can’t walk into a store and not see a shelf full of Dune books.”
