Paranormal remake(s)?

Well, we’re doing it to them all the time, so they might as well start doing it to us.

In a Variety article about PARANORMAL ACTIVITY‘s imminent global expansion, the trade mentions that various countries are in the process of snatching up the hot property with an eye toward remaking it. In some cases, it’s already a done deal.

“Russia, Spain and several Asian territories” have already licensed the flick’s “remake and sequel” rights. Meanwhile, the article notes that Paramount owns that worldwide rights to an English-language sequel – but we already knew that. Of course, this doesn’t mean that anyone is officially remaking the thriller just yet – but don’t be surprised if you read about it.

On the distribution front, PARANORMAL is about to hit England; on Halloween night, the flick will begin playing midnight shows, much as it did here in the States to build its buzz. Then, throughout November, it will roll out into other territories, such as Russia, Spain, Scandinavia, and South Korea (where I’d imagine it’ll be a huge success). In December, it will hit France, Italy, and Australia.

In the meantime, director Oren Peli will try to sell worldwide rights to his latest flick, AREA 51, which is now shooting in Utah and due to wrap in a few weeks. I’m guessing IM Global, which is handling the sales, won’t have any trouble getting people interested…
