Back in January, director Paul Feig addressed the fan response to the announcement that Sony's new GHOSTBUSTERS would be headlined by an all-female cast. There were a lot of negative responses to the news, but Feig replied them with aplomb. Now, he delivers a reply that is a little more blunt.
In an interview regarding his upcoming movie SPY, Feig was asked about the Internet backlash to GHOSTBUSTERS led by Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Melissa McCarthy.
“The Internet is really funny – I love it, but I hate it at the same time. The first wave when you make an announcement like that is overwhelmingly positive. Everyone’s so happy and you’re like, This is great. Then comes the second wave and you’re like, Oh my God. Some of the most vile, misogynistic sh** I’ve ever seen in my life.”
He also had a great answer to fans claiming he is ruining their childhood.
“It’s so dramatic. Honestly, the only way I could ruin your childhood is if I got into a time machine and went back and made you an orphan.”
GHOSTBUSTERS has now been revealed to only be one of two new films based on the classic Ivan Reitman movies. The other, an all male line-up of ghost hunters, has yet to announce a cast or director but has received it's own backlash for being the reverse of the all-female GHOSTBUSTERS. Feig commented on the news of that film.
“I’d heard some rumblings about it,” he says of the project. “Who knew there were so many ghosts to be busted in the world?” He adds that he’s a fan of Tatum and the directors Joe and Anthony Russo, but is concentrating on his film. “All I know is my ladies are going to kick ass and I would not want to go into battle without them.”
It is sad that we live in a world where, after 26 years of having no GHOSTBUSTERS movies, we are getting two, and people still complain. Feig admits they went this direction because they could not find a respectable way to make GHOSTBUSTERS III. So, maybe with these films, Bill Murray may reconsider making at least a supporting or cameo appearance.
GHOSTBUSTERS begins filming this June and hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
