So, as many have no doubt heard, Trump plans to cut funding to the arts by slashing (or eliminating) the budgets for National Endowment For The Arts, the National Endowment For The Humanities, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This includes funding to PBS.
Now, I don't want to get all political (actually that's a lie), but honestly that's not the point of this article. Because, as PBS mentions below, it has always had bipartisan support, so it's not a "liberal vs. conservative" thing, it's a "people who like PBS vs. people who want to cut funding to it" thing. Anyway, PBS sent out a statement about the situation:
PBS and our nearly 350 member stations, along with our viewers, continue to remind Congress of our strong support among Republican and Democratic voters, in rural and urban areas across every region of the country. We have always had support from both parties in Congress, and will again make clear what the public receives in return for federal funding for public broadcasting. The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year, and the benefits are tangible: increasing school readiness for kids 2-8, support for teachers and homeschoolers, lifelong learning, public safety communications and civil discourse.
Now I don't know about you guys, but I love PBS. From MR. ROGERS, to NOVA, to BOB ROSS, to READING RAINBOW, to SESAME STREET, PBS has had a plethora of shows that were well-researched and helped teach generations of children to read, socialize, and be creative. I grew up with many of those shows, and I'm sure many of you did too. Losing out on PBS would be a disaster in my opinion, and again, it doesn't matter who wants to defund them, or what party they're from. We need shows that promote learning for kids, and not trying to sell them fucking toys, goddammit.
