Viola Davis in talks to star in Peacemaker spinoff for HBO Max

Peacemaker was a big success for HBO Max (I’m still humming the theme song) and little time was wasted in renewing the series for a second season. In addition to a new season, plans for a Peacemaker spinoff were put in motion. Deadline has heard that Viola Davis is in talks to star in the Peacemaker spinoff being developed for HBO Max.

Viola Davis would once again play Amanda Waller, the head of Task Force X. The spinoff will be written and executive produced by Christal Henry (Watchmen), with James Gunn also executive producing the project. Gunn had previously teased that they were “working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” but added that he didn’t think “it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.” After playing Amanda Waller in both Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad, Viola Davis reprised the role once again in the first season of Peacemaker. Spoiler Alert: Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Waller’s daughter, exposed the existence of Task Force X and Project Butterfly as well as Waller’s involvement in them to the press at the end of Peacemaker. Sources say the show will build off of that final appearance. In addition to starring in the Peacemaker spinoff, Viola Davis would also serve as an executive producer.

Viola Davis can currently be seen playing Michelle Obama in Showtime’s anthology series The First Lady. She will also star in The Woman King, a historical epic directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard). Davis plays Nanisca, the general of an all-female military unit who fought the French and neighbouring tribes who violated their honour, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for. The Woman King will hit theaters on September 16, 2022.
