Peacemaker Season 2 confirmed by James Gunn; spinoff plans still in the works

Peacemaker, Season 2, James Gunn, John Cena, HBO Max

Ready your hypnotic dance moves because Peacemaker Season 2 is officially on the way! Not long after HBO Max‘s Chief Creative Officer Casey Bloys hinted that a second season of the Suicide Squad spinoff was “looking good,” Gunn confirmed the show’s return on Twitter.

According to Bloys, the first season of Peacemaker has done big numbers for HBO Max. “I don’t want to take anything away from James,” he said. “I think he has been such a terrific partner on the show so I will let him talk about any plans he wants to share.”

In addition to Peacemaker Season 2 being confirmed, Gunn reaffirmed his plans for another Suicide Squad spinoff series. “We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” he told Deadline. “I can’t quite say.”

When asked if Peter Capaldi’s Thinker could be the focus of the new spinoff series, Gunn chuckled, saying, “I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a  comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max said, “The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker. He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious, and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world. As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f***ing chance.”

“Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max,” said Gunn in a separate statement. “To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”

Cena added, “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”

The Season 1 finale for Peacemaker touches down on HBO Max this Thursday, bringing the helmeted hero’s mission to its epic conclusion. Unsurprisingly, Peacemaker has been an absolute hoot from start to finish, with Cena shining like never before in the title role. Fans of the character and series are likely to be thrilled when they hear another season is on the way. I know I am. Grab a fresh pair of tight whities, and let’s go!
