Penelope Cruz to travel to Anti Christ director’s Planet Melancholia

Back in October, we let you know that ANTI CHRIST director and all-around actor-torturer Lars Von Trier was preparing another skewed take on a beloved genre of ours, this time the sci-fi/disaster picture. Called PLANET MELANCHOLIA, it’s to tell the story about a giant planet called Melancholia looming harmfully too close to Earth. Promising “no more happy endings” (because his movies are usually so uplifting) and some visual effects, the Von Trier’s film should do for chaotic disaster epics what ANTI CHRIST did for man vs. nature horror flicks.

According to The Playlist (which got its news from multiple international sources), Von Trier has found a leading lady to emotionally (and maybe physically) abuse: Oscar-winner, and current Oscar-nominee, Penelope Cruz. Also, according to the site, the title has been trimmed to simply MELANCHOLIA.

No word on what kind of character Cruz will be playing, as we still don’t know much about the storyline. Say this much about the actress – she’s got balls of steel. Working with Von Trier is so notoriously difficult, that they even made a documentary about his actors hating him on the set of DOGVILLE!
