Peter Jackson is currently in Cannes and received an honorary Palm d’Or. The director has also given an update to Deadline of his projects to come and explained why he’s passing the directing duties to Andy Serkis for the next Lord of the Rings entry. Jackson said, “It would be more interesting with this particular story –which takes place between Hobbit and Lord of the Rings — if Andy Serkis directed it.” He expounded, “It’s an internal story about Gollum’s psychology and addiction. It’s a personal story to Gollum. Andy knows this guy better than anybody. I didn’t think about me. The more exiting version of this movie is if Any Serkis made it.”
After directing the beautifully animated big screen adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin, Steven Spielberg revealed that he would pass those filmmaking duties on to Jackson next. He said, “Peter Jackson has to do the second part. Normally, if all goes well, he will soon start working on the script. As it takes two years of animation work on the film, for you, I would not expect to see it for about three years. But Peter will stick to it. Tintin is not dead!” Spielberg gave this update around eight years ago. Good news for Tintin fans. Jackson is now actively writing the sequel.
Jackson recently updated,
I’ve been working with Fran on a new Tintin script. The deal was Steven (Spielberg) directs one, and I direct another.”
Deadline even pointed out that he had literally been working on the script during his time at Cannes. Jackson also revealed that he also has his sights on a World War II film that involves the Dambusters Raid — which was an attack on German dams by the Royal Air Force carried out on the night of May 16, 1943 by 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command. Jackson was originally going to pursue that project before he committed to doing The Hobbit films.
The possible plot of the Adventures of Tintin sequel is said to be an adaptation of “The Seven Crystal Balls” and “Prisoners of the Sun,” The Adventures of Tintin 2 would likely bring back Jamie Bell as Tintin and Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, as well as Nick Frost and Simon Pegg as Thomson and Thompson, respectively.
