Kate Winslet Lands Female Lead Role in Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

The next film in the Middle-earth saga, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, has found its female lead in Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown, Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). According to Deadline, Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson spent most of last year convincing Winslet to join the production, which includes the caveat of uprooting her family and moving to New Zealand to shoot her scenes from late May to October. Thankfully, Winslet knows the area after shooting Heavenly Creatures with Jackson in 1994.

Winslet Joins a Band of OG Cast Members

Winslet joins Lord of the Rings veterans Elijah Wood (Mr. Frodo Baggins), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), and Andy Serkis (Gollum). Of course, the trio starred in Peter Jackson’s generation-defining trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

When Does The Hunt for Gollum Take Place?

Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, The Hunt for Gollum follows Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the ring’s location to Sauron. The story hails from J.R.R. Tolkien‘s footnotes. Unfortunately, we know from events seen in Fellowship of the Ring that Gollum is eventually captured by Sauron’s forces and tortured for information about the ring’s whereabouts.

What Else Has Serkis Directed?

In addition to reprising the role of Gollum in the upcoming film, Serkis will direct the LOTR offshoot, with Phillipa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou penning the screenplay. Of course, this is not Serkis’ first rodeo in the director’s chair. He helmed the medical drama Breathe in 2017, the TV movie The Ruins of Empires in 2018, alongside Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and the upcoming adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm for Angel Studios. If you’re not aware of Serkis’ Animal Farm, it stars a hell of a voice cast, which includes Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Gaten Matarazzo, Andy Serkis, Kieran Culkin, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner, Laverne Cox, and Iman Vellani.

Having watched The Fellowship of the Ring this past weekend, I’m looking forward to seeing a film that’s essentially a “missing chapter” from that original film. How will Serkis slot the adventure into the overall narrative? Who will Kate Winslet play in the upcoming film? We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more about this exciting project.
