Pineapple’s Oscar snub

JoBloJoBlo

While James Franco did nab a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, I think even the most fervent PINEAPPLE EXPRESS fan (myself included) would agree that there wasn’t much Oscar hope for the film. Except for one lone category: Best Original Song. As you might remember, Seth Rogen lobbied for 80s rockers Huey Lewis and the News to write an original song titled “Pineapple Express” to close out the film. Huey did just that and you can hear that song from the soundtrack here. Sadly though, today the Academy announced the 49 songs that were eligible for Best Original Song and Huey and the “Pineapple Express” theme song were not included. Even “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” is eligible! The qualifications to be nominated are as follows:

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

As far as I’m aware, “Pineapple Express” fits all those criteria (it has words and music, was written for the film and is the first music cue in the end credits). So what gives? Can anyone explain why this film isn’t even eligible? Not being nominated I can understand but not even eligible? Take a look for yourself at the 49 films deemed worthy in the Academy’s eyes…
