While fans wait to see if Johnny Depp will return to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom says he’d like to know what his beloved character, Will Turner, has been getting up to after all these years. Speaking with Parade about the second and final season of Amazon‘s Carnival Row, Bloom said it would be fun to revisit his blacksmith’s apprentice-turned-pirate character.

“Oh gosh, you know, I did get to go back and play Legolas in The Hobbit, which was ten years later. I was like, ‘This is a lot of fun,'” Bloom said about restringing his bow and perking up his pointy ears to play the fair-haired archer. “Because he’s such a great space to be in, and I think Will [Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean]—I mean, Will’s so great,” Bloom said. “I wouldn’t mind seeing what Will looked like today in some ways because he was such this earnest guy, but after rumbling around the bottom of the ocean for as long as he would have done at this point, it’d be interesting to see how he surfaces and what he’s like.”

Orland Bloom sailed the seven seas as Will Turner in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Will eventually joins Captain Jack Sparrow’s merry band of salty sea dogs after the love of his life, Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley), is kidnapped by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Will Turner returns to the Pirates franchise for 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest and 2007’s At World’s End, which finds Will replacing Davy Jones as the new Captain of the Flying Dutchman. The plot for Dead Men Tell No Tales revolves around Will and Elizabeth’s son, Henry, scouring the ocean floor for the Trident of Poseidon. The ancient relic is said to be capable of breaking curses imposed on sea-faring folk, including the pact that binds Will Turner to the Flying Dutchman. Bloom briefly appears in the film, then returns for a post-credits sequence. The tease sets up a sixth film in the franchise. However, Disney abandoned plans for a sixth Pirates film when Johnny Depp became accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

With plans for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 in the works, and a spin-off film starring Margot Robbie also being kicked around, Bloom could return as Will Turner in another Pirates movie. No plot details for either project are known now, but we’ll keep our ears to the wind for what may come.
