Plissken is pissed!

Well I guess it’s not only genre fans that are
pissed about the possible re-make of John Carpenter’s

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
, because when asked about it, Kurt Russell had
some not so pleasant things to say.

IGN has managed to grab a couple of tidbits of
the interview held between Russell and Entertainment Weekly, and I must admit
that I’m a little surprised about what Kurt had to say.

When asked what he thought about Gerald Butler
helming the role of the one-eyed antihero, Russell said “I
will say that when I was told who was going to play Snake Plissken, my initial
reaction was ‘Oh, man!’ [Russell winces]. I do think that character was
quintessentially one thing. And that is, American.”
Wow. Russell is
actually holding the fact that he’s not American against him? To me that seems a
little shallow.

Russell was also asked about doing a possible
cameo in the movie. He said “(Expletive) that! I am Snake
Plissken! It’s like Sean Connery always watching someone else do their version
of Bond. I think one of the things, for instance, about Escape From New York
that appealed to me was that it wasn’t a special effects extravaganza. It’s a
quiet, dark world and it revolved around watching the behavior of this one guy.
He’s a fascinating character. In fact, he’s the most complex character I’ve ever
played.”

I don’t want to make it seem like I’m in favor of
a remake, but I think Russell may be taking this a little personally. I mean
just because they remake it, doesn’t mean that he’ll no longer be remembered as
Snake Plissken. To see what else IGN had about Russell and the remake, click
