Superhero fatigue might be a real thing, but seemingly that doesn’t include Spider-Man, with the latest film, Brand New Day, looking like it will come close to setting an all-time box office opening record. Spider-Man is one of those superheroes, like Batman, who seems to transcend the genre. There may be people out there who are over superhero movies but will still make an exception for Spider-Man, with every movie featuring the web-slinger having been a major success.
It all began in 2002, when Sam Raimi finally brought the superhero to the big screen, with Tobey Maguire iconically cast in the lead role. Sure, the franchise has had its ups and downs. I’ll never forget attending a midnight screening of Spider-Man 3 and watching a guy who came dressed as the character take off his costume and throw it in the trash after sitting through Raimi’s misguided, emo-tinged take on the character. Likewise, Andrew Garfield’s run as the character was controversial. Yet Spider-Man movies have always done well.
As far as live-action Spider-Man movies go, the lowest-grossing is The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but even that made over $700 million worldwide. Tom Holland’s last two Spider-Man movies made well over a billion dollars each, and Brand New Day will make at least $1 billion—if not closer to $2 billion—with No Way Home having made $1.9 billion worldwide. It’s currently the eighth-highest-grossing movie of all time.
Yesterday, we posted our Spider-Man movie rankings, but now we want to hear from you! What is the best Spider-Man movie? We included all nine live-action Spider-Man films, as well as the two animated Spider-Verse movies, although we didn’t include any of the Sony spin-offs or the MCU movies in which Spider-Man was a supporting character, such as Captain America: Civil War.
