Fans of the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, and I am one of them, are waiting with bated breath for any sign that the next installment in the series is making progress. Production company Platinum Dunes has been developing the latest film at Paramount for nearly three years now, scoring and then losing director David Bruckner, having multiple writers work on scripts with different approaches to the material.
Talking to This Is Infamous editor in chief (and JoBlo news editor) Billy Donnelly, producer Brad Fuller gave an update on what is going on with the next FRIDAY THE 13TH as of this moment: PRISONERS writer Aaron Guzikowski, who Fuller describes as a better writer than they deserve for an F13 movie, is working on the script. He has turned in a "really great" draft, received notes from Paramount and Platinum Dunes, and is now working on revisions.
At an earlier stage in development, certain higher-ups were pushing for the movie to be found footage, and Fuller admits that part of the delay is that he was dragging his feet on the project during those dark days, as he didn't think found footage was fitting for FRIDAY THE 13TH. Now that the people who wanted found footage are no longer in the picture, that approach has been abandoned and Fuller feels that things are now moving in the right direction.
It remains to be seen if they're moving quickly enough to make the January 13, 2017 release date that Paramount had set, but I would say it's not very likely. The movie may have to be released in 2017 no matter what, though, because Paramount only obtained the rights from Warner Bros. for a five year period, and those five years are up in 2018.
