I think it’s safe to say that this has been a pretty good week for Ryan Gosling. Not only did he just sign on to star in The Daniels’ long-awaited follow-up to Everything Everywhere All at Once, but his Project Hail Mary has blown away even the most optimistic box office predictions.
In its second weekend, Project Hail Mary is looking at a week-to-week decline of only about 32%, which is exceedingly rare for a blockbuster. The $54.5 million weekend is about $12 million more than we predicted earlier this week.
To put this into context, Project Hail Mary posted a better second weekend hold than Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which dipped 54%, and Dune: Part Two, which dipped 44%. Dune: Part Two ended up with a final North American gross of $282 million, while Oppenheimer legged out to $330 million domestically. Worldwide, Dune: Part Two made over $700 million, while Oppenheimer fell just short of a billion.
It’s too early to tell what Project Hail Mary’s global footprint will be like, but it’s already made over $300 million worldwide.
Hoppers Holds Strong But Mario Waits
Meanwhile, Pixar’s Hoppers has shown some real legs (or paws), making $12 million this weekend for a $138 million total. It looks like it should end its domestic run around $160 million. That said, it’s about to face major competition from next weekend’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is likely to eat up a huge portion of the family audience.
They Will Kill You Flops
Warner Bros. and New Line had a rare horror misfire this weekend with the Zazie Beetz-led They Will Kill You, which only managed a $5 million opening. That’s a disappointing result for an action-horror hybrid. It may have suffered from being too similar to Ready or Not: Here I Come, which is also underperforming. That film fell a steep 56% to sixth place with $4 million and a $16.2 million domestic total.
Surprise Hit: Bollywood’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge
One unexpected breakout domestically is the Bollywood sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which made another $4.8 million this weekend for a $22.9 million total, breaking records for Indian films in North America.
Meanwhile, Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him added $4.7 million for a $41 million haul and is on track to finish around $50 million.
Scream 7 Breaks A Franchise Record
Scream 7 continues to shatter franchise records, earning $2.6 million this weekend for a $118.6 million domestic total. It has also crossed $200 million overseas, making it the first film in the franchise to hit that mark internationally.
Despite mixed reactions, Scream 8 seems inevitable — even if Kevin Williamson has said he won’t return to direct.
On the indie side, A24’s micro-budget Undertone added $1.6 million for an $18 million total, making it a solid profit for the studio, which has recently lost some ground in horror to Neon.
Finally, IFC and Shudder cracked the top 10 with Forbidden Fruits (read my review HERE), which crossed the $1.7 million mark. Still, its per-screen average (per Comscore) isn’t particularly strong, and it’s likely to find a bigger audience once it hits streaming.

Next weekend is Easter, and it’s shaping up to be a massive one at the box office thanks to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
