Ralphie himself producing A Christmas Story: The Musical

JoBloJoBlo

As the “Elf” musical kicks off on Broadway this holiday season, another Christmas musical could be coming to the Great White Way. Peter Billingsley, who directed COUPLES RETREAT and produced IRON MAN and ZATHURA, is producing a musical adaptation of A CHRISTMAS STORY, the film he also starred in.

Billingsley, who made a career for himself starring as Ralphie in the 1983 Christmas classic, is launching a preview of the musical later this month in Seattle with hopes to bringing it all the way to Broadway. While the musical will obviously follow events in the film, it will also focus on some of the other aspects of Jean Shepherd’s short stories that didn’t make the movie.

One thing you can count on is the major award: Billingsley says, “Just think about the idea of a leg-lamp kickline.”

A list of songs in the musical hasn’t been announced but lurking around the just launched official site it seems a “Fa-Ra-Ra-Ra-Ra” song and a “I Triple Dog Dare You” song appear to be in the works.

Kinda sounds like a cornball idea to me (who can imagine Darren McGavin’s old man breaking out into song?), but hey, it’s the holiday season.
