Star Wars spinoff Rangers of the New Republic reportedly not moving forward

The Star Wars spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic, was first announced last year at Disney’s Investor Day briefing but news about the series has been essentially radio silent ever since. As it turns out, there is a reason for that and it appears that the spinoff will not be moving forward according to reports.

The spinoff series was set to revolve around Cara Dune (played by the since-fired Gina Carano) and explored her potentially joining the New Republic after leaving the Rebel Alliance before its dissolution into the new entity in events before we met her in The Mandalorian. The project looked like it was stalled when Lucasfilm parted ways with Gina Carano over a barrage of offensive statements she made on social media and now Lucasfilm boss, Kathleen Kennedy, has appeared to put the final nail in its coffin.

During a chat with “Empire Magazine (via IGN), Kennedy noted that despite the series’ announcement, she had nothing new to report on the spinoff and any ideas that may have been used for the new show, would likely be used going forward in The Mandalorian instead. Kennedy said, “We’d never written any scripts or anything on that. Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian.”

Plans were put on hold for the spinoff after Carano was let go and it appears that they’re simply moving on to other things instead of exploring the idea further. Star Wars is no stranger to its plans being reshuffled so this isn’t entirely surprising and since scripts weren’t even written yet, I’m sure they weren’t really deep in the development process on the series either.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to the third season of The Mandalorian as well as two other spinoff series, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, coming soon. There are plenty of new stories to explore in this universe even if one won’t have the opportunity to move forward.
