Rebel Wilson to star in, produce Crowded comic book techno thriller film

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Australian-born Barden Bellas alum Rebel Wilson is getting into the comic book movie making business. As recently announced by The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson has optioned the rights to Crowded, an upcoming Image Comics book. Along with her acquisition of the proper paperwork, Wilson intends to star in and produce a film adapted from the series, which doesn't hit stands until August 15, 2018.

Here's the official synopsis for Crowded #1 via Image Comics:

Ten minutes in the future, the world runs on an economy of job shares and apps, including Reapr: a crowdfunding platform to fund assassinations. Charlie Ellison leads a quiet, normal life until she’s suddenly targeted by a million-dollar Reapr campaign. Hunted by all of Los Angeles, Charlie hires Vita, the lowest-rated bodyguard on the Dfend app. As the campaign picks up speed, they’ll have to figure out who wants Charlie dead before the campaign’s 30 days—or their lives—are over. From Eisner-nominated writer CHRISTOPHER SEBELA (Heartthrob, We(l)come Back, Harley Quinn), RO STEIN & TED BRANDT (Captain Marvel, Raven: The Pirate Princess), TRIONA FARRELL (Runaways, Mech Cadet Yu), and CARDINAL RAE (BINGO LOVE, ROSE).

Whoa! As an avid reader of comics from all over the spectrum, I must say, that is an impressive list of creators. Plus, the premise sounds pretty intense. Truth be told, I've already pre-ordered my copy of Crowded #1.

When work on CROWDED gets underway, Wilson's Camp Sugar will produce alongside Oni Entertainment. Furthermore, to assure page-to-screen accuracy, Sebela will serve as a consulting producer.

For the time being, Wilson is busy shooting her scenes for Taika Waititi's upcoming Nazi satire JOJO RABBIT starring Scarlett Johansson. However, before Waititi attempts to present a comedic angle on one of the most hated groups in history, Wilson can be found as a part of New Line's upcoming rom-com ISN'T IT ROMANTIC, which stars Liam Hemsworth and Priyanka Chopra. If that sounds like your jam, you can look forward to seeing ISN'T IT ROMANTIC when the film opens in theaters on Valentine's Day 2019.
