Red-band trailer for The Lure gives us a crazy man-eating mermaid musical

Movie fans are typically aware of just about every movie out there, but occasionally, something slips under our radar and we wonder how in the hell we survived without it. That's pretty much how I felt when I watched this red-band trailer for THE LURE for the first time, a musical/thriller which deals with man-eating mermaids in a 1980's nightclub. Yes please. THE LURE is the directorial debut of Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska and centers on two mermaids, Golden and Silver, who encounter a rock band on a beach in Poland. After accompanying the band back to the nightclub where they regularly perform, Golden and Silver soon land jobs as strippers and backup singers. The audiences quickly grow entranced by their singing as well as their on-stage transformations and the pair become overnight sensations. However, their bond is tested once Silver falls in love with the band's guitarist and Golden hungers for human prey. Ruh oh.

That looks all kinds of crazy, in the best way possible. I'm not sure how effective THE LURE will wind up being, but it's certainly got my attention. THE LURE has been making the rounds at film festivals for the past year, but it will next screen at New York’s IFC Center on February 1, 2017.
