Red Notice sequel will happen if fans demand it, says producer

Red Notice is the most expensive Netflix endeavor to date with a production cost of $200 million but it proved to be the streamer’s biggest movie to date as it became the most-watched original movie in Netflix history back in November. Success like this guarantees a Red Notice sequel will get made but producer Hiram Garcia says the Dwayne Johnson movie, which also stars Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, will only get a sequel if the fans demand it.

Producer Hiram Garcia spoke on a potential sequel to the film during an interview with Collider. Since Garcia is a part of the producing team bringing Black Adam to the big screen later this year and is still in development on another Jumanji sequel, he knows judging from Johnson’s schedule alone it will be a few years until we get a sequel and the desire to do one will come down to fan demand:

“We do have a really fun blooper reel, but we did like where we ended. In regards to the end credits, with something like this that, in essence, you could view as a franchise starter, we never really like to get ahead of ourselves too much. I think ultimately it’s the fans that dictate if they want a sequel, we’ll be ready to deliver them one. But there was never really a talk about doing some kind of post-credits scene because we always knew how we wanted the movie to end. We knew we wanted to tee up something big, but we didn’t feel that there was really any need for any kind of a post-credits scene. I think we have ideas in our head in terms of where we’d like the story to go, and if the fans respond to the movie the way we’re hoping they will, then it’s on us to be ready to deliver that, and we do have some really good ideas on deck.”

Red Notice wasn’t exactly a critical darling (36% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes) but its 92% audience score indicates that causal watchers enjoyed what the film offered. In its first 28 days, the movie managed to pull in over 360 million watched hours, which put it ahead of previous Netflix record-holder Bird Box. I thought given the cast and the potential to provide some solid escapism entertainment, the film didn’t exactly live up to my expectations and it felt a tad lazy. That being said, based solely on numbers, Red Notice was a streaming hit so I wouldn’t be surprised if a sequel happens once the stars involved clear their very busy schedules.

Per the official synopsis from Netflix, “When an Interpol-issued Red Notice — the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted— goes out, the FBI’s top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he’s forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief, “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other’s company. The all star cast is joined by Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos. Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, Skyscraper) and produced by Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Beau Flynn’s Flynn Picture Co. and Thurber’s Bad Version, Inc., Red Notice is a stylish globe-trotting game of cat-and-mouse (and cat).”
