If you are sad as I am that BREAKING BAD is coming to a close in just a few short weeks, then this news should be a bright spot in your cloudy day: AMC has officially greenlit the pilot for the spin-off series BETTER CALL SAUL starring Bob Odenkirk!

Deadline says the show will take place before Saul Goodman’s introduction in the second season of BREAKING BAD and will not be as dark as the acclaimed series. It will also be an hour-long rather than a traditional thirty minute sitcom. This opens the door for the show to explore all sorts of seedy criminal elements from the New Mexico setting that has been the home for all five seasons of BREAKING BAD.

Goodman was originally created as comic relief but has since been involved in some of the darker scenes in the series. Creator Vince Gilligan had this to say about the spin-off last year:

“I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff. I like the idea of a lawyer show in which the main lawyer will do anything it takes to stay out of a court of law. He’ll settle on the courthouse steps, whatever it takes to stay out of the courtroom. That would be fun — I would like that.”

The fact that the show is a prequel leaves the character’s fate ambiguous leading into the final episodes of BREAKING BAD, but whatever happens it is nice to know the universe inhabited by these characters will carry on. Expect more news as BREAKING BAD comes to an end.
