It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Richard Elfman film, and that’s got to change. If I lived in L.A., that would all change in mid-July as the American Cinematheque will be doing a mini-retrospective of the man’s films. I suppose I can do my own Elfman fest at home… Alone… So alone…
Who is Richard Elfman, you ask? First of all, shame on you! Second of all, he’s the director of a few cult classics that you’ve definitely heard of. Try on the 1982 crazy-fest FORBIDDEN ZONE for size. Or the equally bizarro Full Moon flick SHUNKEN HEADS (1994). How about the ultra-dark horror/comedy MODERN VAMPIRES? (That one features an impossibly crazy cast: Casper Van Dien, Natasha Gregson-Wagner, Kim Cattrall, Rod Steiger, Udo Kier, Craig Ferguson – yes the late night talk-show host) If you haven’t seen these nutty movies, you will now have your chance.
The screenings for MODERN VAMPIRES and SHRUNKEN HEADS will be at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Friday, July 17 and FORBIDDEN ZONE is on Saturday, July 18. Richard Elfman and co-writer Matthew Bright will be in attendance, as well as – in Elfman’s words – “many notable actors”. Sounds like a blast, so don’t miss it!
Natasha Gregson-Wagner. Where’s this girl been lately?
