Ice Cube and Kevin Hart could be gearing up for Ride Along 3, as Deadline reports that the sequel is in early development at Universal. Director Tim Story and producer Will Packer are in early discussions to return, along with Cube and Hart.

The Ride Along Universe

The first movie followed Ben, a security guard who must prove to his girlfriend’s police officer brother, James, that he’s worthy of marrying her by going on a ride-along. Of course, things take a turn, and they wind up on the hunt for an arms dealer. The 2016 sequel took the pair to Miami to take down a drug dealer.

A third installment was in the works shortly after the release of the sequel, but it never got off the ground. The creative team always wanted to get back together, but they just wouldn’t agree on an idea. Now, a decade later, screenwriter Daniel Gold (Workin’ Moms) has come up with a concept they’re all excited by.

Commercially Successful, but Critically Trashed

Neither Ride Along nor its sequel was particularly well received by critics, but both did quite well at the box office. The first film grossed $154 million worldwide, while the sequel grossed $124 million worldwide.

Our own Eric Walkuski said the first film was like a cross between 48 Hrs. and Training Day, but “without the grit, guts or swagger of either.” He also slammed it as a repetitive slog with little genuine humour.

Somehow, he found the sequel to be even worse. “It’s hardly even a movie, it’s like a commercial for some obnoxious product that it should be ashamed of promoting,” he wrote in his review. “I genuinely thought it would be impossible for this sequel to sink lower than the original, but somehow it is indeed worse. Whereas the first film is a bad time, the sequel is a genuine chore.” Yikes.

I haven’t seen either film myself, so I can’t comment on their quality, but I imagine they must have their fans. So, are you down for Ride Along 3?
