We've previously covered reports that Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, Alexandre Aja, Jason Blum, Steven Spielberg, and Mary Harron are among the filmmakers developing shows for the upcoming streaming service Quibi, and now comes news that Ridley Scott is joining them in the endeavor to draw viewers to the new service.
Scott's company Scott Free is teaming with Matthew James Wilkinson of Stigma Films and producer-financier Anton to produce a thriller called Curs_r for Quibi.
Toby Meakins will be directing the series from a script written by Simon Allen. Meakins and Allen previously collaborated on a series of horror short films.
Scott and Allen will serve as executive producers on the series, which will tell the story of
a broke student who, in pursuit of an unclaimed $100,000 prize, plays an obscure 1980s survival computer game. Ater a series of unexpectedly terrifying moments, she soon realizes she’s no longer playing for the money, but for her own life as the game locks her into an inescapable cycle of horror.
That sounds like it could be pretty cool.
Scott had this to say about the project:
With all of the many platforms on which one can now show content, including the groundbreaking new format at Quibi, this is an extraordinary time to be a filmmaker. We are very much looking forward to working with Jeffrey Katzenberg and his Quibi team, as well as with these very talented filmmakers, Toby and Simon, to create a series that promises to break new boundaries in the horror genre."
Shows on Quibi are meant to be watched on your smartphone while you're on the go, so episodes will only be around 10 minutes long. The streaming service will go online on April 6, 2020.
