We haven't heard anything new about Robert Rodriguez's HEAVY METAL in almost three years. He revealed plans for the project at Coimc-Con in 2011, but there hasn't been any word on the film since. In a new interview with Screen Rant, the director says HEAVY METAL could end up on his new television network (El Rey) as a series.

“Well, now that I’ve got a television network, potentially we could go into television as well.”

Robert Rodriguez went on to talk about his plans for the animation in HEAVY METAL, and he says it will be a mix of multiple styles.

“It would be a variation of different types of animation … Classic, some hand drawn, some digital, some mixed media. That was always great about ‘Heavy Metal’ is everybody did a different thing, story dependent.”

HEAVY METAL isn't the only project Robert Rodriguez is working on. Recently we learned he's already had some conversations with Frank Miller about SIN CITY 3, and Rodriguez also gave a quick update on a third film.

“This one comes out August 22nd and then we’ve already been talking about a third so we could go as soon as we want to.”

Hopefully "as soon as we want to" doesn't mean another nine years between SIN CITY flicks. However, a lot is going to depend on how well SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR performs at the box office, and if it bombs, it might kill the possibility of another movie. I'm a big Robert Rodriguez fan, so I have my fingers crossed he gets to do both SIN CITY 3 and HEAVY METAL.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR starring Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Eva Green, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven and Juno Temple will be in theaters August 22nd, 2014.
