I must admit I don’t know anything about the ELITE SQUAD films, but after this news, I just might have to seek it out.
Deadline just busted out the major news that MGM, now back in action after a long period of inactivity and uncertainty, is looking to revive the ROBOCOP reboot that they’ve been trying to get off the ground for oh so long. Word is that Brazilian director Jose Padilha is the man being looked at by the studio; they’re “in talks”, as the trade puts it, so nothing has been signed and stamped just yet. Still, it would appear as though Robo is back online.

For some Padilha background, I’ll turn it over to Deadline: They [MGM] were impressed by Padilha’s track record with taut crime dramas Elite Squad and a sequel that came out in 2010. Those films were Spanish language and didn’t play huge in the U.S., but Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within grossed over $60 million in Brazil alone last year, surpassing Avatar, Shrek Forever and Alice in Wonderland in Padilha’s home country. The original won a Golden Bear at the 2007 Berlinale.
Check out the trailer for ELITE SQUAD below and let loose with your thoughts. Based on the visual style displayed, I’d say Padilha actually seems to be an inspired choice, but there’s so much else to consider – including the age-old question of “Do we REALLY need a remake of this?!”.
