After being in a sort of limbo for a few years things seem to be going along nicely for the new Batman movie, and after finding its title vigilante in Robert Pattinson the movie has secured one more important member of the crew in Oscar-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser. The man behind the lens will reunite with director Matt Reeves after previously working with him on the 2010 vampire movie, LET ME IN.

"It’s great to be working with Matt again," Fraser told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. "The Batman franchise is iconic and it's a privilege to now be able to visualize it in my own way. Especially with the cumulative creative potential of all the talent and technicians we have in front of and behind the camera."

Fraser made a name for himself by working on a series of films in his native Australia, all before landing the gig for Reeves’ remake of the movie LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. From there Fraser lent his talent to critically acclaimed works like ZERO DARK THIRTY and FOXCATCHER, as well as the massive blockbuster ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. That same year he worked on the movie LION for Garth Davis, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

The announcement of Fraser coming on board contradicts reports that surfaced last week claiming that frequent Quentin Tarantino collaborator Robert Richardson (ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD) had been hired for the project. Richardson apparently told THR this wasn’t true, and that he had never spoken to Reeves about the movie.

Reeves’ BATMAN will hardly be the most recent event film Fraser has been attached to, as he’s been hard at work on Denis Villeneuve’s latest, the big-budget DUNE movie, which is set for fall of next year. The new Batman movie comes off Ben Affleck’s turn as the character for the DCEU and will center on a Bruce Wayne around his early 30s, where he’s not exactly new to the crime-fighting game but still has much to learn.

Fraser is an inspired choice for the new Batman movie, as his ability to emphasize the emotional weight of any environment, whether they be the enormous set pieces in ROGUE ONE or the streets of India in LION, by focusing on natural light is just astounding. Movies like ZERO DARK THIRTY and FOXCATCHER have distinct, powerful looks, and even among all the movies in the series, ROGUE ONE is easily one of the most visually striking. The man can work in any medium and make it work wonders, so I'm dying to see what he comes up with for this new Batman movie. If I didn't already have enough reasons to need this movie right now!
