Do people even remember AVATAR at this point? It's been so long since the first one – and besides news about delays and even more sequels constantly being added to the already proposed trilogy – it seems like the sequels would never see the light of day, kept in constant pepertuity by director James Cameron like Philip Seymore Hoffman's play in SYNEDOCHE, NEW YORK.
Well, in an interview with We Got This Covered, star Sam Worthington had this to say about the for realzies in production AVATAR sequels:
They’re going to be shooting concurrently. The plan is to have some time in between, I think, but these things are always ambiguous until they start. We’re still set to start in the summer, though. James needed time to perfect the scripts. Whenever he says jump I go because he’s the man. I’ve read all the scripts, they’re great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now. This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.
As Worthington says in the interview, there's no set start time or release date, but there have indeed been multiple scripts written, so at least some progress has been made. Also of note, the eight year gap and focus on Jake with a family could be interesting. If anything, with T2 and ALIENS, Cameron has shown he is good at making good – if not better – sequels to their originals. I am honestly curious how he'll continue this tale, even if the first film seriously underwhelmed me.
