Sandra Bullock to be the villainous lead in Despicable Me spinoff film, Minions

Universal Pictures has announced that none other than Sandra Bullock will lend her lungs to the DESPICABLE ME spinoff, MINIONS.  Bullock will play “Scarlet Overkill, a stylish bad-ass super-villain who is (what else?) bent on world domination.”

Here’s the lowdown on the film (from Deadline):

This spinoff establishes that Minions have existed since the beginning of time, in service of history’s most ambitiously evil villains. Through their lovable ineptitude, Minions have managed to thwart and ultimately kill all of those bad guys. This story picks up in the 1960s, before they hench-ed for Gru. After wiping out all their masters, the Minions fall into a collective depression and three of them set out to seek a new evil master. They wind up at a villain convention, where they compete for the right to be henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, whose Audrey Hepburn-like high style appearance belies her world domination ambition and her aspirations to become the world’s first female super-villain.

Sounds pretty fun, actually, and I like the idea of the MINIONS having a number of evil “leaders” throughout time.  Talk about opening up your franchise doors, eh?  Truthfully, the MINIONS are the most fun aspect of the DESPICABLE ME series, so I’m down with seeing the little yellow, pill-shaped, gibberish-speaking creatures take center stage in their own feature.  Bullock is an inspired choice as well, as she’s demonstrated her comic talents many times over.

The MINIONS will next be seen in this summer’s DESPICABLE ME 2, out July 3, 2013, where they will likely be the best thing there as well, while their own feature, MINIONS, is set for December 19, 2014
