Kevin Feige says an upcoming MCU project fronted by Scarlett Johansson is still happening

Marvel President Kevin Feige is typically cagey about giving Marvel Cinematic Universe secrets to the press. Still, while speaking with Entertainment Tonight’s Ash Crossan, he let a few tidbits fly about the MCU’s future. While speaking with Crossnan at the Las Vegas premiere of The Marvels, Feige dished about the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson returning to the land of capes and tights.

While Feige hesitates to say much about Downey Jr. suiting up as Iron Man for another MCU project, he assures Crossnan that Johansson’s mystery MCU project is still happening. Feige says he and Johansson have not discussed the chances of her Black Widow character returning to the MCU. However, he did tease that another project is in the works.

“We did not discuss that at the retreat. It’s the truth,” Feige said. “We’re doing a project with Scarlett. I love Robert, he’s a part of the family. But in terms of returning, we’ll have to see.”

Despite the rough legal aftermath of the theatrical-to-streaming issue with Scarlett Johansson and Disney over her solo Black Widow movie, Johansson has maintained a working relationship with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige. In November of 2021, Feige teased that he and Johansson were developing a “top secret project” at Marvel that would not relate to her Black Widow character.

If Johansson no longer plays her Black Widow character, where does this leave her MCU involvement? Could Johansson spearhead another project featuring one of Marvel’s characters deserving of the spotlight? A White Widow solo film starring Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, perhaps? One thing’s for sure. When Johansson returns to the House of Ideas, fair terms for her participation will be paramount to the project’s success.

With so much upheaval in Hollywood in 2023, it’s nice to hear there’s some water flowing under the bridge between Johansson and Marvel after pay disputes and more complicated their working relationship.

What could Scarlett Johansson’s “mysterious” Marvel project be? Would you be cool with a Black Widow resurrection for a new Avenger film? How about a guest spot in the upcoming Thunderbolts film? With Marvel looking to rekindle its flame after a few missteps, it feels like anything is possible.
