Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal's adaptation of author Alvin Schwartz's SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK book series began filming recently and is headed towards theaters near you sometime in 2019. And speaking of the series of killer short stories to scare kids to death and back, today we have word that Wild Eye Releasing has acquired worldwide rights to a documentary about Schwartz’s YA book series.

Yes, Wild Eye Releasing has acquired worldwide rights to SCARY STORIES from director Cody Meirick and the film will be getting a theatrical release timed to the expected release of the del Toro-produced feature adaptation. The doc features more than 40 interviews including fellow YA horror authors like R.L Stine (GOOSEBUMPS) as well as Schwartz’s family members, folklorists, artists and fans.

We'll let you know when we hear more about this must-see documentary, but until then make sure to hit us up and let us know how much you loved the book series as a kid below! And remember, Del Toro's live-action film follows:

a young girl still haunted by her mother’s disappearance on Halloween night — an incident that she suspects her father knows more about than he lets on. Years later, Stella and her friends are involved in a Halloween prank gone wrong. But are they really at fault, or was it the work of a vengeful spirit — a female ghost who uses her scary stories to come after the teens when they begin to investigate the disappearance of several children?

The film stars Zoe Colletti, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, Michael Garza, Austin Abrams, Natalie Ganzhorn, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, and Lorraine Toussaint. Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, J. Miles Dale, and Elizabeth Grave are producing the film with del Toro, who also wrote the screenplay with Kevin Hageman, Dan Hageman, Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan. SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK will be released sometime in 2019.
