The kickstart of directing career

We’re big fans of Scott Adkins here at JoBlo. We’ve talked to him on occasion when he has a new film to promote and I recently included him in my list for “Five Action Stars Who Deserved Bigger Movies.” He seems like someone who would’ve been a bigger deal if he had been born earlier so he could break out in the 90s era. However, the man’s still a worker and he is taking on a newer kind of role with his upcoming movie, Brawler. He will not only star in the film, but he is directing the action project as well.

According to Deadline, Adkins’ directorial debut will be heading to the Cannes market this year. The film will also star Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2‘s Lewis Tan, along with Larry Lamb (The Hatton Garden Job) and Emily Bennett. Adkins directs from a screenplay that was written by Matt Venne (Dexter: Resurrection). The movie is about “a disgraced MMA champion is pulled into a violent underworld by the sins of his past, armed only with his fists, he must fight hitmen, criminal gangs, and his own inner demons, to protect those he loves.”

Adkins works with his previous collaborators, Ben Jacques (One Shot franchise) and Craig Baumgarten (Universal Soldier), who are both producing the project. The executive producers on the film are Signature Films’ CEO Marc Goldberg (Trap House) and Head of Production & Development Sarah Gabriel (Trap House).

While he has ample experience in front of the camera, the action star has made a statement on this new film, “After twenty years of building a career as an actor in the action world, I was ready to get behind the camera. The script for Brawler gripped me and it became clear that it should be the story I tell in my first feature film. I look forward to audiences seeing my work in this new career milestone.”

Brawler producers Ben Jacques and Craig Baumgarten also stated, “We are delighted to be partnering with Scott again for this important new career expansion as well as seeing the coming together of two action legends that have never collaborated before.”
