Lots of video games are moving forward to the big screen these days and the next one to make progress will be DEUS EX. The movie version of the sci-fi game has just picked up director Scott Derrickson to helm the project.
Derrickson’s most recent movie is the Ethan Hawke horror movie SINISTER. Prior to that he directed the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE. He will co-write the screenplay with his SINISTER scribe C. Robert Cargill.
CBS Films announced the project today and that it will be directly based on the latest game in the franchise, DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION.
Plot: Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.
Derrickson had this to say about the news: “Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”
Derrickson has done a good job directing smaller projects, like SINISTER, where the movie is scaled to a house or a smaller scope. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL was his largest project to date and it was a boring movie that was not particularly great visually either. Here is hoping that he can prove me wrong and deliver an exciting sci-fi thriller.
