Now that the cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is returning after thirteen years to voice their characters in a new Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, memories of making the 2010 action comedy are flooding back. This is especially true for Michael Cera, who embodied the lovelorn titular character. The movie was a love letter to many things in geek culture — anime, 8-bit and 16-bit video games, martial arts, rock music, and even a little Seinfeld. And when a filmmaker like Edgar Wright is at the helm, it’s safe to say the style and the comedy are going to be very affectionately handled.

In a new interview with GQ, Michael Cera reflects on his time during the production of the film. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, he didn’t want it to come to an end. “We just had the greatest vibe with everybody. I think that trickled down from Edgar and the energy that he was creating. We all got to rehearse together and spend a lot of time together before we even started making the movie,” Cera recalls. He added that when filming had wrapped, there was a feeling of withdrawal. “This is my world, this is my group of friends,” he thought. And being high off the energy of filming, the actor admitted he hoped “always going to be this way.” Once everyone had finished and continued on their own way, Cera said he “was a little depressed.”

That feeling of school being over and losing all your friends is something a lot of people can relate to. Cera all of a sudden came upon the emotion, and once he wrapped, “It all just goes away, and you’re like, ‘Where did everybody go?’” As he worked on more and more projects, the Arrested Development star became accustomed to the feeling, but with Scott Pilgrim he was “sad to lose it” and felt he “could have kept making that [Scott Pilgrim vs. the World] forever, even though it was exhausting.”

The whole cast of the film has returned for the revival of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The former director, Edgar Wright, even returns to executive produce the series, which is set to be an eight-episode run. The new anime is scheduled to stream on Netflix on November 17.
