See the first three minutes of The Emoji Movie

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

THE EMOJI MOVIE still feels like an elaborate MADTv sketch to me (and not even a particularly clever one). But, alas, it exists, and I’m just going to have to accept it. The abyss is staring back at me, indeed. Hell, it even has an overly-qualified celebrity cast, which is a mainstay of those kind of satirical sketches. This one includes the likes of T.J. Miller, Patrick Stewart, Steven Wright, and Anna Faris.

Well, with the film just a couple weeks away, Sony has released the first few minutes of the film. Let’s take a look:

You know what? I wouldn’t call it particularly funny, but this might be the best version of this idea possible. Which isn’t saying much, but it doesn’t look like a complete dumpster fire either. Well, at least not this particular scene. I mean, I chuckled at the monkey business joke (even if it was expected), as well as the old emojis joke (including the capper about one of them yelling he broke his colon). I mean, they’re easy jokes, but they’re at least executed well. I’m not sure I want to see a whole movie of puns and sight gags, but for a few minutes it was harmless.

Meanwhile, THE EMOJI MOVIE will be sent to theaters July 28th, 2017.
