Seth Gordon exits Uncharted as the studio takes a new creative direction

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

As one long delayed video-game adaptation moves forward, another long delayed video-game adaptation has found itself stalled once again. Seth Gordon, who was all set to direct the big-screen adaptation of Sony's popular Uncharted video game franchise, has now exited the project. UNCHARTED follows the career of treasure hunting thief Nathan Drake in what Sony is envisioning as "a swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones."

Sony Chief Tom Rothman had been discussing the fate of UNCHARTED ever since he took over the big chair at Sony, but rather than slash the budget, as has been his modus operandi in the past, he decided to take UNCHARTED in a new creative direction, which is what prompted Gordon's exit. Last we heard, Mark Boal (ZERO DARK THIRTY) was working on the screenplay for UNCHARTED but it looks like Rothman's new creative direction may necessitate a return to the drawing board.

UNCHARTED is still scheduled for a June 10, 2016 release but as the film has no director and no star, I'd imagine that Sony will be pushing that date back. The next game in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, is set to be released in either the first or second quarter of 2016.
